Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions

Future nature and photography journeys led by Norwegian biologist, teacher and wildlife photographer Håvard Rosenlund — in cooperation with experienced local operators and guides.

The first expedition concept is based on my own experience photographing tigers in India. A second possible expedition — jaguar in the Brazilian Pantanal — is currently being researched and will be evaluated during my upcoming trip there.

What is Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions?

Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions is a developing concept for small, carefully curated wildlife and photography journeys to some of the world’s most exciting nature destinations.

The idea is simple:

To create meaningful wildlife experiences for people who want more than a standard safari.

These journeys are for those who want to observe, understand and photograph wild animals in the landscapes they belong to — with time, patience, respect and good local knowledge.

The expeditions will be built around:

• small groups
• strong wildlife locations
• expert wildlife knowledge
• experienced local partners
• photography-friendly planning
• biological and ecological context
• respect for animals and local communities

These expeditions will be built around destinations, seasons and local partners chosen specifically for strong wildlife opportunities. While wild animals are never staged or controlled, the aim is to give each group excellent chances of meaningful encounters and rewarding photographic moments.

Who is behind this?

My name is Håvard Rosenlund. I am a Norwegian biology teacher, wildlife photographer and the person behind Wildlife Vagabond.

Wildlife and nature photography have shaped much of my life.

I have lived and worked in nature reserves in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, carried out my master’s fieldwork in the Serengeti, travelled through Central India to photograph tigers and leopards, and I am now continuing this journey with jaguar photography in the Pantanal.

For many years, Wildlife Vagabond has been my personal collection of wild animals photographed in nature. Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions is a natural next step: a way to share these experiences with others through small, thoughtful and well-prepared wildlife journeys.

My role is not to replace local guides. Local expertise is essential. My role is to bring an additional layer: broader wildlife knowledge, ecological and evolutionary context, photographic experience, preparation, communication and a familiar point of contact for travellers who want a more personal wildlife journey.

Who are these journeys for?

These expeditions may be for you if you:

• love wildlife, nature and photography
• dream of seeing animals such as tiger, leopard, jaguar or other spectacular wildlife
• prefer small groups over mass tourism
• want a more personal and knowledge-based travel experience
• appreciate patient wildlife watching
• care about ethical wildlife encounters
• want support with photography before and during the trip

You do not need to be a professional photographer.

You should, however, have a genuine interest in wildlife and be comfortable with early mornings, long days, waiting, changing conditions and the fact that wild animals never appear on command.

What this is not

This is not mass tourism.

It is not a luxury-first travel concept.

It is not a race to collect animals as quickly as possible.

And it is not a photography workshop where everything is only about camera settings.

The goal is to create wildlife journeys where the experience, the animals, the place, the photography and the understanding of nature all belong together.

First expedition concept – India

Tiger Photography Expedition

Central India is one of the most iconic regions in the world for seeing and photographing wild tigers.

I have previously travelled there to photograph tigers and leopards, and it remains one of the most powerful wildlife experiences I have had. This makes India the most natural first expedition concept for Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions.

The journey would focus on tiger, leopard and the wider wildlife of India’s forest landscapes, in cooperation with a trusted local operator.

India is not only about the animals themselves. It is about the atmosphere of the forest, the alarm calls, the anticipation, the tracks in the dust, the sudden silence — and the moment when a tiger appears.

Main focus: Tigers, with other large predators such as leopard, dhole and sloth bear as possible highlights.
Other highlights: Indian forest wildlife, birds, deer, monkeys, wilderness atmosphere

Pantanal Jaguar Photography Expedition

The Brazilian Pantanal is one of the world’s most exciting destinations for jaguar photography, and I will be travelling there soon to photograph jaguar and evaluate the area, logistics, guiding and local operator setup for a possible future small-group expedition.

If the experience, ethics, logistics and photographic opportunities meet the standard I want for Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions, Pantanal may become one of the first future journeys offered.

The potential expedition would focus on jaguar photography along the rivers of the Pantanal, while also exploring the wider wetland ecosystem — giant otters, caimans, capybaras, birds of prey, kingfishers, herons and the extraordinary abundance of wildlife that makes this region unique.

Future expedition ideas

The first focus will be India and Pantanal, because these are the most realistic starting points and connect to journeys and operators I already know or am currently exploring.

In the future, Wildlife Vagabond Expeditions may also include:

• Big 5 safaris in the Serengeti, Tanzania
• Snow leopards in Ladakh, India
• Pumas in Patagonia, Chile
• Other carefully selected nature and photography destinations

Some destinations are based on places I already know well. Others will only become real expedition concepts after I have personally scouted them or built a strong enough partnership with trusted local experts.

New destinations will only be added when they can be properly researched, quality-assured and built with reliable local partners.
