New Update – Working hard at adding content
Hi everyone! First update in a while. I thought it would be a good thing to let everyone in on what I’ve been up to this last year and what I am doing currently.
I had a wonderful trip to India in April of last year, and it was supposed to be a trip that got me back on track with my blogging. With fresh new content and tons of photographs of exotic species to add. Things didn’t really work out that way. And here is why that is:
First of all, I am creating profile pages of all species of mammals, birds and reptiles I get decent photos of (I even add some subpar photos if the animal is rare or I find it too important not to add to my website). This is, for me, the most important part of my website, and it satisfies the nerdy child in me that loved to collect animal fact pages when I was young. It also seems that Google likes them, which is a nice bonus!
I began adding profiles of Indian species I had seen (starting with the tiger – which was my main objective for the trip), when I realized I had hardly added any species at all since my South African days, which ended 10 years back. I hadn’t really finished adding all of the animals from that time, even. It just didn’t feel right going straight to Indian wildlife, when my website lacked most of the wildlife I had seen and photographed over the last 10 years. So, I turned the clock back a decade, and started adding profiles of species from my days in South Africa that I never got around to adding earlier, as well as some species I photographed on a couple of vacations in the US. And then I continued with all the species I have photographed in my own country (Norway) for the past 10 years. With the help of AI to write the text (I do edit and fact check a lot, though), I could finally fast track the process of adding animals, but it still takes 3-4 hours on average adding one single species (there are photos to edit, maps to create, text in both English and Norwegian to edit, and other small things that ties everything together).
How far along am I, and what is the way forward after that?
Since November of last year, I have added about 250 species (on top of the 120-something that was there already), making the total 377 species as of right now. There are just about over 100 species left (most of them from India, but a few from Norway and from a recent trip to Sweden). When I am done adding them all, I will add a few profiles for the countries and places I have visited (some of them are works in progress you can check out right now: Norway, South Africa, Tanzania, United States, United Kingdom, and India). I also hope to add a synopsis of my trip to India when all the species are added (it is a trip that really needs its own post!).
That is the list of things I’m working towards, and when all of that is done, I can finally use my website as I always intended: To add new content and species as I travel and experience new things. To have it as my wildlife diary of sorts. That also means a more active social media presence, and I will be adding photos and content that ties with my website.
With that said, don’t expect to hear too much from me until I am finished. I’ll add a section on the front page where you can see what species I added most recently, so you can follow along on the progress.
I’ll see you again on the other side!
I hope you have made good progress on your task since last July. I just found your website and I really love your photos and the honest, personal nature of what you are doing. I’m just a beginner so looking for inspiration and tips as I don’t even have a proper camera just now, just a bridge camera. Though it’s becoming a bit limiting in terms of quality, I’ve yet to exhaust my use and knowledge of my entry level gear so gonna carry on with what i’ve got just now. I have a page on Instagram which I am trying to build, just the same, more like a diary and a way to organise my photos and make it a little bit entertaining and fun for folk that might not be into wildlife as much…yet! I might as well share my progress and if people like them, that’s a bonus. But I am starting to see just how much work it takes even for one post with a couple of photos and some text. Definitely no less than 1 hour for fairly minimal posting after looking through 100s of photos and choosing the best one with small blurb…but usually hours and resarching stats and facts etc…you have a gargantuan task on your hands to go back through all your photos…but I am inspired as it’s really great to see your timeline of progress and gear upgrades and it’s so nicely set out. I’m trying to do same but I just don’t have time due to other work…trying…I guess at the end of the day, we do it for the enjoyment ourselves…I really hope we will see more photos from your past and then more recent travels but you shouldn’t bust a gut about it! Best wishes from Scotland!
Thanks for the nice words and encouragement, Anna! It has taken me a lot longer to complete everything due to being swamped by other things for the past 6 months, but I am nearing completion. I can’t say exactly when it is done, but I will write an update when everything is ready. Good luck with your own project! I followed you back on Instagram and will be looking forward to see your progress 🙂
