India’s Zitting Cisticola Index Rose 51.7% Long Term and 3.6% Per Year Recently
The 2025 interim update to State of India’s Birds, released on 6 May 2026, estimated a substantial increase in the national abundance index for zitting cisticola (Cisticola juncidis). The updated long-term estimate was +51.7%.
The current annual trend was also positive at +3.6% per year. Both updated estimates therefore clearly supported an increase.
The analysis estimated the species’ distribution range in India at 1,774,820 km². State of India’s Birds treats the species as a resident associated with open habitats.
The 2025 update used about 48 million eBird observations available through 31 May 2025 and updated numerical trend and range estimates for 942 Indian bird species. The trend values describe change in a reporting-based abundance index rather than direct counts of individual birds.
