Darwin Tree of Life Added Two Haplotype Genome Assemblies for Carrion Crow

Darwin Tree of Life registered two new genome-assembly projects for carrion crow (Corvus corone) on 26 July 2026. The projects represent haplotype 1 and haplotype 2 of the bCorCoo1 assembly and are part of the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s wider genome resource for the species.
A diploid bird has two copies of each chromosome, one inherited from each parent. A haplotype-resolved assembly keeps these inherited sequence versions largely separate, preserving differences that can be blurred when a genome is reduced to a single consensus sequence.
The two assemblies are part of the broader bCorCoo resource, which also includes genomic and transcriptomic data used to support assembly and gene annotation.
This is primarily a new genomic reference resource rather than a study reporting a biological effect. The separate haplotype assemblies can provide a cleaner basis for future comparisons of genetic variation, genome structure and gene annotation in carrion crows and related crow lineages.
